2023 Solar Decathlon: LJHS+

Role: CAD architect

Skills: passive sustainability and retrofit design

Solar Decathlon was a year-long collegiate competition to design the most efficient retrofit for an educational building. As a member of the architecture team, I assisted in designing the school layout to increase the utility of different spaces. My team won third place honors in the competition in May 2023.

Above is a CAD model of the retrofitted Lisle Junior High School, named LJHS+. This highlights the solar panels and improved architecture that my team and I added to the school.

Above is a diagram of the wastewater treatment for reuse that we implemented into LJHS+.

Using this living machine system, the flow of people, and an updated HVAC system, I helped identify a way to implement passive sustainability into the school’s design, decreasing energy usage in the process. The new design not only lowered the school’s expenses, but also significantly reduced the carbon footprint.
